What are North Carolina's requirements for obtaining a permit?
Anyone under age 18 must complete 30 hours class and 6 hours of road work by a NC state certified driving school or public school conducted class to receive a NC Permit.

When will the 6 hours of driving take place?
LOCAL STUDENTS ONLY After completing 30 hours in the classroom students will receive a phone call from a driving instructor. Updated information on the schedule will be given during class time.
Who is eligible for the online Virtual Driver Education course?
Our Virtual Driver Education course is available to teens who are at least 14.5 years old but not yet 18 years old, and who are currently enrolled in a public, private, charter, or licensed homeschool program in North Carolina.
How does the online course work?
The course is taught live by certified instructors through a virtual classroom. You can join from anywhere with an internet connection using laptop/chromebook computer (no cell phones). We use Google classroom. The course includes lessons on traffic laws, road signs, safe driving practices, and preparation for the NC permit and license tests.
What happens after I complete the online portion of the course?
After finishing the virtual classroom phase, you will receive an official NC DMV SBT-611 certificate in the mail. This certificate is required to begin behind-the-wheel training. You can take driving lessons with any driving school, or if you're local, we offer in-person driving lessons as well.
Can I take the online course if I don’t live in Brunswick County?
Yes! The online course is available to students throughout North Carolina, so you can take it from anywhere.
Is the Virtual Driver Education course approved by the NC DMV?
Yes, our course is fully approved by the North Carolina DMV, so you can be confident that it meets all state requirements for driver education.
